✍️ IELTS Writing Scoring System

Your writing is assessed in two tasks (Task 1 and Task 2), and both are marked based on four criteria, each worth 25% of the total score.

✅ Writing Band Descriptors

Criteria	What It Means
Task Achievement (Task 1) Task Response (Task 2)	Did you fully address the task, answer all parts of the question, and support your ideas?
Coherence and Cohesion	Is your writing logically organized and easy to follow? Do you use paragraphs and linking words well?
Lexical Resource	Do you use a variety of vocabulary correctly, and avoid repetition and errors?
Grammatical Range and Accuracy	Do you use a variety of grammatical structures accurately and appropriately?

Important Notes:

• Task 2 is worth more than Task 1 (2/3 of your total writing score).
• Each criterion is scored from 0 to 9.
• Final writing band = average of scores across the 4 criteria, rounded to the nearest half-band.

The Speaking test is also graded using four equal criteria, each worth 25% of your total score.

✅ Speaking Band Descriptors

Criteria	What It Means
Fluency and Coherence	Do you speak smoothly without too many pauses or hesitations? Are your ideas well-connected?
Lexical Resource	Do you use a wide range of vocabulary naturally and accurately? Can you paraphrase when needed?
Grammatical Range and Accuracy	Do you use varied grammar structures accurately (e.g., conditionals, passives)?
Pronunciation	Are you clear and understandable? Do you use stress, intonation, and rhythm well?
