IELTS teaching is a curious profession. To the untrained eye, it may seem like I spend my days leisurely correcting essays while sipping a Starbucks coffee. The reality? It\u2019s a chaotic blend of detective work, cheerleading, and occasionally questioning the entire English language. Here\u2019s a behind-the-scenes look at my life.<\/p>\n

Every IELTS teacher secretly doubles as a chef\u2014but instead of gourmet meals, we\u2019re cooking up metaphors, examples, and strategies.<\/p>\n

\u201cImagine your essay is a sandwich,\u201d I say, while a student looks at me like I\u2019ve lost my marbles. \u201cThe introduction is the top slice of bread. Body paragraphs? The fillings! And the conclusion ties it all together like that precious bottom slice.\u201d<\/p>\n

What I don\u2019t mention is that my own sandwich is falling apart because life is busy<\/em>. My lunch break consists of gulping down tea while explaining why Task 1 charts are not a secret plot by the Illuminati.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

1. Grammar Detective: The Case of the Missing Articles<\/strong><\/h3>\n

If I had a dollar for every time I\u2019ve had to ask, \u201cWhere\u2019s your article?\u201d I\u2019d be living on a tropical island, sipping iced tea and grading essays from a hammock.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe cat is under table,\u201d says a student confidently.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnder the<\/em> table,\u201d I reply, smiling.<\/p>\n

They nod, then repeat, \u201cYes, under table.\u201d<\/p>\n

At this point, I consider starting an investigative TV show: Grammar CSI: Articles Edition.<\/em> Each episode would feature me hunting down rogue \u201cthe\u2019s\u201d and interrogating suspiciously placed commas and apostrophes.<\/p>\n

2. Vocabulary Drama: The Curse of Over-ambition<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Every IELTS teacher dreads the moment a student discovers \u201cadvanced\u201d vocabulary. Suddenly, sentences like, \u201cI enjoy hiking in nature,\u201d<\/em> transform into \u201cI partake in a plethora of ambulatory escapades amidst verdant landscapes.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

I try to steer them gently back to simplicity. \u201cYour goal isn\u2019t to sound like a Victorian poet. Just… say you like walking in the forest.\u201d<\/p>\n

Their response? \u201cBut will I get a Band 9 for forest<\/em>?\u201d<\/p>\n

Sigh.<\/em><\/p>\n

3. The Listening Test Horror Show<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The IELTS Listening test is a battleground where even the bravest students falter.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s multiple choice. How hard can it be?\u201d they say.<\/p>\n

Five minutes later: \u201cI think the answer is B. Or C. Wait… maybe it’s A?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Me: \u201cWhy not listen to it again?\u201d<\/p>\n

Student: \u201cI did. I\u2019m um… less sure.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

I try not to laugh as they question their hearing, the speaker\u2019s intentions, and occasionally, the existence of logic itself.<\/p>\n

4. Writing Task 1: The Art of Chart Decoding<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Teaching Task 1 is like leading an expedition into uncharted territory.<\/p>\n

\u201cDescribe the graph,\u201d I instruct.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are many lines,\u201d they reply, staring at it as if it\u2019s an ancient treasure map.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, but what do the lines do<\/em>?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey go up… and down… and up again.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGreat! Now, tell me why<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cue an existential crisis as they try to interpret data trends while I gently remind them that \u201cskyrocketed like a rocket of sky.\u201d\u00a0 <\/em>is not really band 9 material.<\/p>\n

5. Speaking Test: The Comedy Club<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Part 1: Simple. Part 2: Manageable. Part 3: Unpredictable chaos.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you think technology will replace books?\u201d I ask, expecting a thoughtful response.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d they declare confidently.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause books are… books. And technology is… not books.\u201d<\/p>\n

I try to coax a bit more depth, but they\u2019re adamant. Books are books, and that\u2019s that.<\/p>\n

Sometimes, their honesty is so pure that I have to hide my laughter behind my \u201cteacher face.\u201d<\/p>\n

6. The Teacher\u2019s Survival Kit<\/strong><\/h3>\n

No IELTS teacher survives without their trusty tools:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • A pen for circling every missing \u201cs\u201d in plural nouns.<\/li>\n
  • A coffee mug large enough to double as a swimming pool.<\/li>\n
  • A stress ball for when someone uses \u201cin conclusion\u201d after the first paragraph.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    And, of course, a never-ending supply of patience for when students ask, \u201cCan I write my entire essay in bullet points?\u201d<\/p>\n

    7. The Unexpected Joys<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    For all its quirks, teaching IELTS is a treasure trove of rewarding moments. There\u2019s nothing quite like watching a student\u2019s confidence grow as they finally nail their essay structure or conquer their fear of speaking.<\/p>\n

    Plus, you\u2019ll always have a fun answer to \u201cWhat do you do for a living?\u201d<\/em> at parties. \u201cOh, I help people chase their English-speaking dreams while explaining why you can\u2019t start an essay with \u2018Firstly, cats are fluffy.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

    And then there are the moments of pure comedy, like the time a student honestly described their dream job as \u201cprofessional sleeper\u201d or when they declared that pizza should be a human right.<\/p>\n

    8. In Conclusion (Because This is an IELTS Blog)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Life as an IELTS teacher isn\u2019t always glamorous. It\u2019s a mix of grammar battles, mispronounced words, and philosophical debates over whether \u201ca lot of\u201d is formal enough.<\/p>\n

    But it\u2019s also filled with laughter, learning, and the joy of knowing you\u2019ve helped someone move closer to their dreams.<\/p>\n

    And if that dream involves a plethora of ambulatory escapades? Well, at least they\u2019ll describe it with proper grammar.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
