Exam Season, Emotional Support Tea, and the Student Who Threatened the Subjunctive<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

A few weeks have passed since my last update, and the atmosphere has changed dramatically.<\/p>\n

The weather is warmer.
The students are stressier.
And I now receive emails marked \u201cURGENT\u201d that are absolutely not urgent.<\/p>\n

Exam season has arrived.<\/p>\n

As a British tutor living in the USA, I\u2019ve discovered that American student panic is wonderfully theatrical. British students tend to quietly suffer in silence. American students announce their academic despair like they\u2019re opening a Broadway show.<\/p>\n

Honestly? I admire it.<\/p>\n

Monday \u2013 \u201cQuick Question\u201d (It Was Not Quick)<\/h3>\n

Woke up to an email titled:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cTiny grammar clarification :)\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Brave reader, the attachment was seven pages long.<\/p>\n

SEVEN.<\/p>\n

The student wanted:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • tense review,<\/li>\n
  • article corrections,<\/li>\n
  • vocabulary feedback,<\/li>\n
  • pronunciation notes,<\/li>\n
  • and \u201cjust a quick confidence check.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    At this point I\u2019m less of a tutor and more of an emotional support linguist.<\/p>\n

    \n

    Tuesday \u2013 The Student vs The Subjunctive<\/h3>\n

    Advanced grammar lesson.<\/p>\n

    A dangerous place.<\/p>\n

    I introduced the subjunctive:<\/p>\n

    \n

    \u201cIf I were\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

    Immediately one student narrowed his eyes and said:<\/p>\n

    \n

    \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

    Not \u201cI don\u2019t understand.\u201d
    Not \u201cCould you explain again?\u201d<\/p>\n

    Just:<\/p>\n

    \n

    \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

    He spent the next ten minutes arguing that nobody talks like this in real life.<\/p>\n

    Which is fair.
    \nBut unfortunately English grammar was designed centuries ago by people wearing wigs and refusing happiness.<\/p>\n

    Eventually he sighed dramatically and muttered:<\/p>\n

    \n

    \u201cFine. If I were<\/em> wrong\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

    Progress.<\/p>\n

    \n

    Wednesday \u2013 Group Class Chaos<\/h3>\n

    Today\u2019s speaking topic was:<\/p>\n

    \n

    \u201cDescribe your ideal holiday.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

    Simple. Safe. Relaxing.<\/p>\n

    Incorrect.<\/p>\n

    Within minutes:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • one student was passionately defending cruises,<\/li>\n
    • another claimed airports are \u201ca social experiment,\u201d<\/li>\n
    • and one man gave a ten-minute speech about why he doesn\u2019t trust hotel carpets.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Honestly, valid concerns all round.<\/p>\n

      Meanwhile I was desperately trying to steer the conversation back toward useful travel vocabulary and away from conspiracy theories about complimentary breakfast buffets.<\/p>\n

      \n

      Thursday \u2013 British Problems Abroad<\/h3>\n

      One of my students asked:<\/p>\n

      \n

      \u201cDo Americans understand your accent easily?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

      I laughed so hard I nearly disconnected myself from Zoom.<\/p>\n

      Most of the time, yes.
      \nBut occasionally I say words like:<\/p>\n

        \n
      • \u201cwater,\u201d<\/li>\n
      • \u201cbottle,\u201d<\/li>\n
      • or \u201cTuesday,\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        \u2026and watch people look at me like I\u2019m a Victorian ghost asking for directions.<\/p>\n

        I\u2019ve started unconsciously code-switching.<\/p>\n

        Sometimes I hear myself say \u201czee\u201d instead of \u201czed\u201d and feel like I\u2019ve betrayed my ancestors.<\/p>\n

        \n

        Friday \u2013 The Accidental Threat<\/h3>\n

        A student became very emotional about essay structure and finally declared:<\/p>\n

        \n

        \u201cIf this introduction does not improve, I shall simply perish.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

        A dramatic overreaction.<\/p>\n

        Naturally, I replied:<\/p>\n

        \n

        \u201cThat\u2019s excellent formal English.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

        Later in the lesson, another student accidentally wrote:<\/p>\n

        \n

        \u201cThe graph experienced emotional damage.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

        Honestly? Same.<\/p>\n

        \n

        \ud83c\udf89 Weekend \u2013 Recovery & Biscuits<\/h2>\n

        Saturday:
        \nI attempted productivity.<\/p>\n

        This mainly involved opening my laptop, staring at my lesson plans, and then rewarding myself for the effort with snacks.<\/p>\n

        Sunday:
        \nWent to a caf\u00e9 and overheard two university students arguing about semicolons.<\/p>\n

        I almost joined in.
        \nThis is who I am now.<\/p>\n
