Opened an email that read:<\/h5>\n<h5 data-start=\"271\" data-end=\"390\"><\/h5>\n<p data-start=\"271\" data-end=\"390\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\u201cDear Sir or Madam,<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"271\" data-end=\"390\">I am writing to apply for the scholarship because YOLO.<br data-start=\"611\" data-end=\"614\" \/>Respectfully,<br data-start=\"629\" data-end=\"632\" \/>Alex\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"643\" data-end=\"814\">I stared at the screen for a full minute.<br data-start=\"684\" data-end=\"687\" \/>I wanted to scream but also kind of\u2026 clap?<br data-start=\"729\" data-end=\"732\" \/>Told Alex that \u201cYOLO\u201d is not considered formal academic reasoning.<br data-start=\"798\" data-end=\"801\" \/>He replied:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"643\" data-end=\"814\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\u201cWhat if I add a semicolon?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"849\" data-end=\"889\">Honestly, not the worst idea I\u2019ve heard.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"891\" data-end=\"894\" \/>\n<p data-start=\"896\" data-end=\"1122\"><strong data-start=\"896\" data-end=\"954\">Tuesday \u2013 Sock Puppets and the Great Affect\/Effect War<\/strong><br data-start=\"954\" data-end=\"957\" \/>Another day, another student mixing up \u201caffect\u201d and \u201ceffect\u201d like it\u2019s performance art.<br data-start=\"1044\" data-end=\"1047\" \/>In a moment of pure desperation, I reached for two nearby socks and said:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"1123\" data-end=\"1235\">\n<p data-start=\"1125\" data-end=\"1235\">\u201cThis is <strong data-start=\"1134\" data-end=\"1144\">Affect<\/strong>. She\u2019s a verb. She does things.\u201d<br data-start=\"1177\" data-end=\"1180\" \/>\u201cThis is <strong data-start=\"1191\" data-end=\"1201\">Effect<\/strong>. He\u2019s a noun. He\u2019s the result.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"1237\" data-end=\"1392\">Was this professional?<br data-start=\"1259\" data-end=\"1262\" \/>No.<br data-start=\"1265\" data-end=\"1268\" \/>Was it effective?<br data-start=\"1285\" data-end=\"1288\" \/>Yes.<br data-start=\"1292\" data-end=\"1295\" \/>Did my student name them \u201cSocky\u201d and \u201cMr. Feels\u201d and demand they return every lesson?<br data-start=\"1380\" data-end=\"1383\" \/>Also yes.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1394\" data-end=\"1397\" \/>\n<p data-start=\"1399\" data-end=\"1623\"><strong data-start=\"1399\" data-end=\"1448\">Wednesday \u2013 The 4th of July, Explained Poorly<\/strong><br data-start=\"1448\" data-end=\"1451\" \/>My American students were giddy about <em data-start=\"1489\" data-end=\"1509\">\u201cthe long weekend\u201d<\/em> and kept asking me what I\u2019d be doing for the Fourth.<br data-start=\"1562\" data-end=\"1565\" \/>As a British tutor, this puts me in a morally grey area.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1399\" data-end=\"1623\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\u201cAh yes, the day you all celebrated getting rid of me. How jolly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1697\" data-end=\"1872\">One student asked if we have fireworks in the UK.<br data-start=\"1746\" data-end=\"1749\" \/>I said, \u201cYes, but we usually reserve them for when a royal gets married or a kettle reaches full boil.\u201d<br data-start=\"1852\" data-end=\"1855\" \/>(He believed me.)<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2003\" data-end=\"2006\" \/>\n<p data-start=\"2008\" data-end=\"2208\"><strong data-start=\"2008\" data-end=\"2061\">Thursday \u2013 ESL Plot Twist: Homework in Morse Code<\/strong><br data-start=\"2061\" data-end=\"2064\" \/>Student said he \u201ctried something different\u201d for his vocabulary assignment.<br data-start=\"2138\" data-end=\"2141\" \/>It was written entirely in <strong data-start=\"2168\" data-end=\"2182\">Morse code<\/strong>.<br data-start=\"2183\" data-end=\"2186\" \/>Dot. Dot. Dash. Chaos.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2210\" data-end=\"2358\">I asked why.<br data-start=\"2222\" data-end=\"2225\" \/>He said: <em data-start=\"2234\" data-end=\"2278\">\u201cBecause I wanted you to feel like a spy.\u201d<\/em><br data-start=\"2278\" data-end=\"2281\" \/>I did. I felt like a very tired, underpaid, overly caffeinated grammar spy.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2360\" data-end=\"2422\">He later admitted he just didn\u2019t want to write full sentences.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2424\" data-end=\"2429\">Fair.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2431\" data-end=\"2434\" \/>\n<h5 data-start=\"2436\" data-end=\"2654\"><strong data-start=\"2436\" data-end=\"2486\">Friday \u2013 Grammar and Fireworks (in That Order)<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p data-start=\"195\" data-end=\"322\">There I was, halfway through explaining the past perfect continuous \u2014 really in the zone \u2014 when the sky outside <strong data-start=\"307\" data-end=\"319\">exploded<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"324\" data-end=\"385\">Fireworks. Loud, proud, and extremely red, white, and blue.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"387\" data-end=\"619\">My student froze.<br data-start=\"404\" data-end=\"407\" \/>\u201cWas that\u2026 an explosion?\u201d<br data-start=\"433\" data-end=\"436\" \/>I said, \u201cYes. It\u2019s the Fourth of July \u2014 the annual American tradition of declaring independence through explosives, questionable hot dogs, and \u2018Sweet Caroline\u2019 played far too loudly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"621\" data-end=\"938\">We attempted to continue, but every sentence was followed by a <em data-start=\"695\" data-end=\"703\">KABOOM<\/em> that made it sound like grammar itself was under siege. Honestly, it added a certain flair. I might start coordinating my lessons with fireworks for dramatic effect. Nothing says \u2018past participle\u2019 like a well-timed sky rocket.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"105\" data-end=\"204\">As the rockets and explosions subsided she asked why we say \u201cmaths\u201d and Americans say \u201cmath.\u201d<br data-start=\"164\" data-end=\"167\" \/>I paused, smiled and said:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"105\" data-end=\"204\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\u201cWell, some things got lost in the revolution \u2014 vowels, extra letters, and apparently, plural logic.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"312\" data-end=\"425\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">She laughed. I sipped my tea.<br data-start=\"345\" data-end=\"348\" \/><strong data-start=\"348\" data-end=\"425\" data-is-last-node=\"\">Happy Independence Day to the brave souls who spell colour without a \u2018u\u2019.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2975\" data-end=\"2978\" \/>\n<h5 data-start=\"2980\" data-end=\"3022\">Weekend \u2013 God Save The Day Off<\/h5>\n<p data-start=\"3023\" data-end=\"3135\">Saturday:<br data-start=\"3032\" data-end=\"3035\" \/>Went outside! Touched grass! Briefly regretted it.<br data-start=\"3085\" data-end=\"3088\" \/>Came back in, made tea so strong it could vote.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3137\" data-end=\"3293\">Sunday:<br data-start=\"3144\" data-end=\"3147\" \/>Got lost in a rabbit hole about whether \u201caluminium\u201d or \u201caluminum\u201d is correct.<br data-start=\"3224\" data-end=\"3227\" \/>Spoiler: <em data-start=\"3236\" data-end=\"3293\">we\u2019re right and we have the extra syllable to prove it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3295\" data-end=\"3429\">Lit a sparkler in honour of international students everywhere who\u2019ve mastered conditionals.<br data-start=\"3386\" data-end=\"3389\" \/>They deserve fireworks more than anyone.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0Started the week with a writing task review.
