Not metaphorically. Literally.<br data-start=\"346\" data-end=\"349\" \/>Flight delayed 4 hours. Found a semi-quiet corner near the Pret A Manger.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"426\" data-end=\"655\">Started a lesson with my C1 business English student while a man next to me loudly argued with his suitcase (the suitcase was <em data-start=\"552\" data-end=\"561\">winning<\/em>).<br data-start=\"563\" data-end=\"566\" \/>Meanwhile, I taught \u201cnegotiation phrases\u201d using the boarding announcements as examples.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"657\" data-end=\"830\">\u201cPassengers unwilling to gate-check their bags will not be allowed to board.\u201d<br data-start=\"736\" data-end=\"739\" \/><strong data-start=\"741\" data-end=\"798\">\u201cThat\u2019s what we call a non-negotiable offer, Sandra.\u201d<\/strong><br data-start=\"798\" data-end=\"801\" \/>10\/10. Business English gold.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"832\" data-end=\"835\" \/>\n<p data-start=\"837\" data-end=\"1057\"><strong data-start=\"837\" data-end=\"871\">Tuesday \u2013 The Fridge Question\u2122<\/strong><br data-start=\"871\" data-end=\"874\" \/>Student: \u201cWhy do we say <strong data-start=\"898\" data-end=\"908\">fridge<\/strong> and not <strong data-start=\"917\" data-end=\"931\">frigerator<\/strong>?\u201d<br data-start=\"933\" data-end=\"936\" \/>Me: \u201cWell, <em data-start=\"947\" data-end=\"961\">refrigerator<\/em> doesn\u2019t have a \u2018d\u2019\u2026 but <em data-start=\"986\" data-end=\"994\">fridge<\/em> does.\u201d<br data-start=\"1001\" data-end=\"1004\" \/>Student: \u201cSo\u2026 it\u2019s just\u2026 nonsense?\u201d<br data-start=\"1039\" data-end=\"1042\" \/>Me: <em data-start=\"1046\" data-end=\"1055\">\u201c\u2026Yes.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1059\" data-end=\"1265\">This led to a 20-minute tangent on English logic (spoiler: there is none), and then I accidentally invented a new word: <strong data-start=\"1179\" data-end=\"1197\">\u201cfridgecision\u201d<\/strong> \u2013 the difficult decision of whether or not to eat week-old pasta.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1267\" data-end=\"1333\">I give it three months before it ends up in the Oxford Dictionary.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1335\" data-end=\"1338\" \/>\n<p data-start=\"1340\" data-end=\"1598\"><strong data-start=\"1340\" data-end=\"1381\">Wednesday \u2013 Spelling Wars: Episode IV &#8211; There&#8217;s No Hope.<\/strong><br data-start=\"1381\" data-end=\"1384\" \/>New student from Canada asked if she should use British or American spelling.<br data-start=\"1461\" data-end=\"1464\" \/>Before I could answer, two other students (one from London, one from New York) jumped in and it turned into an actual spelling duel:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1600\" data-end=\"1729\">\n<li data-start=\"1600\" data-end=\"1624\">\n<p data-start=\"1602\" data-end=\"1624\">UK: \u201cIt\u2019s <em data-start=\"1612\" data-end=\"1620\">colour<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1625\" data-end=\"1672\">\n<p data-start=\"1627\" data-end=\"1672\">US: \u201cIt\u2019s <em data-start=\"1637\" data-end=\"1644\">color<\/em> \u2013 no \u2018u\u2019, keep it sleek.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1673\" data-end=\"1729\">\n<p data-start=\"1675\" data-end=\"1729\">Me: \u201cIt&#8217;s <strong data-start=\"1685\" data-end=\"1694\">chaos<\/strong> and I just want a biscuit\/cookie.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1731\" data-end=\"1989\">We agreed on a truce: she can use whichever system doesn\u2019t cause an existential crisis.<br data-start=\"1818\" data-end=\"1821\" \/>(But secretly, British spelling <em data-start=\"1853\" data-end=\"1857\">is<\/em> a conspiracy. No one needs that many silent letters. <em data-start=\"1911\" data-end=\"1920\">Honour?<\/em> For whom? And <em data-start=\"1935\" data-end=\"1944\">draught<\/em> beer sounds like something Gandalf ordered.)<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1991\" data-end=\"1994\" \/>\n<p data-start=\"1996\" data-end=\"2329\"><strong data-start=\"1996\" data-end=\"2027\">Thursday \u2013 Zoom Shenanigans<\/strong><br data-start=\"2027\" data-end=\"2030\" \/>Wi-Fi kept freezing during class. Every time I struck a teaching pose, Zoom captured me mid-gesture looking like I was conducting an invisible orchestra.<br data-start=\"2183\" data-end=\"2186\" \/>Student screen-shotted it and made a meme titled:<br data-start=\"2235\" data-end=\"2238\" \/><strong data-start=\"2238\" data-end=\"2329\">\u201cWhen your tutor says &#8216;Let&#8217;s practice reported speech&#8217; but your soul leaves your body.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2331\" data-end=\"2336\">Not gonna argue that one.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2338\" data-end=\"2341\" \/>\n<p data-start=\"2343\" data-end=\"2599\"><strong data-start=\"2343\" data-end=\"2384\">Friday \u2013 False Friends and Pizza Lies<\/strong><br data-start=\"2384\" data-end=\"2387\" \/>Student asked me if &#8220;actual&#8221; in English means &#8220;current,&#8221; like it does in Spanish.<br data-start=\"2468\" data-end=\"2471\" \/>I said no, and then watched the light leave her eyes. She whispered, \u201cI\u2019ve been telling people \u2018my actual boyfriend\u2019 for years\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2601\" data-end=\"2752\">I told her not to worry. English is the land of lies.<br data-start=\"2654\" data-end=\"2657\" \/>Our \u201coven pizza\u201d instructions still say \u201ccrispy in 8 minutes\u201d and we all know that\u2019s a fantasy.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2754\" data-end=\"2757\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"2759\" data-end=\"2817\">WEEKEND \u2013 SWEATPANTS &amp; BRITISH DETECTIVE SHOWS<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2818\" data-end=\"2941\">Saturday\u2019s weather: \u201cCloudy with a 90% chance of snacks.\u201d<br data-start=\"2875\" data-end=\"2878\" \/>I celebrated the end of the week with two personal victories:<\/p>\n<ol data-start=\"2942\" data-end=\"3066\">\n<li data-start=\"2942\" data-end=\"2993\">\n<p data-start=\"2945\" data-end=\"2993\">Cleaned my desk for the first time since 2022.\u00a0 (The year of the great coffee spill)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2994\" data-end=\"3066\">\n<p data-start=\"2997\" data-end=\"3066\">Tried yoga. Gave up. Had a biscuit. Felt more flexible emotionally.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p data-start=\"3068\" data-end=\"3306\">Sunday highlight: went to the local market where someone sold \u201cauthentic British scones\u201d but pronounced it \u201cscone\u201d like \u201cphone.\u201d<br data-start=\"3196\" data-end=\"3199\" \/>I almost gave them a mini TED Talk on regional dialects but remembered I was technically <em data-start=\"3288\" data-end=\"3304\">off the clock.<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3308\" data-end=\"3429\">Binged 5 episodes of <em data-start=\"3329\" data-end=\"3347\">Midsomer Murders<\/em>.
