Monday \u2013 Live from Gate 47B<\/em><\/strong>
I had to teach from the airport. Not metaphorically. Literally.
Flight delayed 4 hours. Found a semi-quiet corner near the Pret A Manger.<\/p>\n

Started a lesson with my C1 business English student while a man next to me loudly argued with his suitcase (the suitcase was winning<\/em>).
Meanwhile, I taught \u201cnegotiation phrases\u201d using the boarding announcements as examples.<\/p>\n

\u201cPassengers unwilling to gate-check their bags will not be allowed to board.\u201d
\u201cThat\u2019s what we call a non-negotiable offer, Sandra.\u201d<\/strong>
10\/10. Business English gold.<\/p>\n

\n

Tuesday \u2013 The Fridge Question\u2122<\/strong>
Student: \u201cWhy do we say fridge<\/strong> and not frigerator<\/strong>?\u201d
Me: \u201cWell, refrigerator<\/em> doesn\u2019t have a \u2018d\u2019\u2026 but fridge<\/em> does.\u201d
Student: \u201cSo\u2026 it\u2019s just\u2026 nonsense?\u201d
Me: \u201c\u2026Yes.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

This led to a 20-minute tangent on English logic (spoiler: there is none), and then I accidentally invented a new word: \u201cfridgecision\u201d<\/strong> \u2013 the difficult decision of whether or not to eat week-old pasta.<\/p>\n

I give it three months before it ends up in the Oxford Dictionary.<\/p>\n

\n

Wednesday \u2013 Spelling Wars: Episode IV – There’s No Hope.<\/strong>
New student from Canada asked if she should use British or American spelling.
Before I could answer, two other students (one from London, one from New York) jumped in and it turned into an actual spelling duel:<\/p>\n

    UK: \u201cIt\u2019s colour<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    US: \u201cIt\u2019s color<\/em> \u2013 no \u2018u\u2019, keep it sleek.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    Me: \u201cIt’s chaos<\/strong> and I just want a biscuit\/cookie.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    We agreed on a truce: she can use whichever system doesn\u2019t cause an existential crisis.
    (But secretly, British spelling is<\/em> a conspiracy. No one needs that many silent letters. Honour?<\/em> For whom? And draught<\/em> beer sounds like something Gandalf ordered.)<\/p>\n

    Thursday \u2013 Zoom Shenanigans<\/strong>
    Wi-Fi kept freezing during class. Every time I struck a teaching pose, Zoom captured me mid-gesture looking like I was conducting an invisible orchestra.
    Student screen-shotted it and made a meme titled:
    \u201cWhen your tutor says ‘Let’s practice reported speech’ but your soul leaves your body.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Not gonna argue that one.<\/p>\n

    \n

    Friday \u2013 False Friends and Pizza Lies<\/strong>
    Student asked me if “actual” in English means “current,” like it does in Spanish.
    I said no, and then watched the light leave her eyes. She whispered, \u201cI\u2019ve been telling people \u2018my actual boyfriend\u2019 for years\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

    I told her not to worry. English is the land of lies.
    Our \u201coven pizza\u201d instructions still say \u201ccrispy in 8 minutes\u201d and we all know that\u2019s a fantasy.<\/p>\n

    \n

    WEEKEND \u2013 SWEATPANTS & BRITISH DETECTIVE SHOWS<\/h3>\n

    Saturday\u2019s weather: \u201cCloudy with a 90% chance of snacks.\u201d
    I celebrated the end of the week with two personal victories:<\/p>\n

    1. \n

      Cleaned my desk for the first time since 2022.\u00a0 (The year of the great coffee spill)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    2. \n

      Tried yoga. Gave up. Had a biscuit. Felt more flexible emotionally.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Sunday highlight: went to the local market where someone sold \u201cauthentic British scones\u201d but pronounced it \u201cscone\u201d like \u201cphone.\u201d
      I almost gave them a mini TED Talk on regional dialects but remembered I was technically off the clock.<\/em><\/p>\n

      Binged 5 episodes of Midsomer Murders<\/em>. I now speak only in cryptic metaphors and offer people tea during tense moments.<\/p>\n

      Words of Wisdom from Week 2:<\/h3>\n
      \n

      \u201cIf you can explain conditionals while an airport announcement says your gate has changed for the 5th time \u2014 you\u2019re not a tutor, you\u2019re a linguistic Jedi.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
